Trio Midnight

Kálmán established the innovative mainstream jazz trio, Trio Midnight, with János Egri and Elemér Balázs in 1990. The Trio helped Kálmán to earn early recognition and made him a regular at such prestigious events as the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy, the Getxo Jazz Festival in Spain and the Dinant Jazz Nights in Belgium.

The style of the present mature Trio is much more than mainstream jazz: altough based on standards and compositions of Kálmán, it is truly improvisational contemporary jazz that is comprised of different trends. During its 15 years the Trio gained international reputation: in 1995 they won the first prize at the Hoeilaart talent contest where Kálmán also won the best soloist prize. In 2000, the Trio received the eMeRTon prize of the Hungarian Radio. Their last CD, released in December 2005, is the recording of the concert with Lee Konitz at Dinant Jazz Nights.
